Alluring ancient history, glorious gastronomy, golden sand beaches and a resort to suit everyone:welcome to Cyprus.
Here at Villa Select, we’re proud that our portfolio includes a selection of lovely Cypriot properties. So, we thought we’d share just why you should join us to discover this magical Mediterranean Island, and where you should visit when you do.
What’s more, with pleasant weather and mild temperatures throughout the year, Cyprus is a great destination whatever the month.
What are you waiting for?
Cyprus is home to countless stunning stretches of sand, offering something for everyone’s taste in beaches – from bustling bays to secluded coves.
Fig Tree Bay, named after the solitary fig tree that stands close by, is an ultra-popular and beautiful beach in the upmarket resort of Protaras. According to local legend, the tree arrived with eastern invaders in the 17th century and has overlooked the Cypriot coastline ever since. From this bay, enjoy a variety of thrilling watersports – including surfing, paragliding, water-skiing and more!
Green Bay is a quieter spot and great for swimming, Kapparis Beach’s golden sands are a local favourite, the Blue Flag-accredited Pernera Beach is surrounded by several tavernas, while tiny Sirena Bay is a secluded cove with a charming tree-shaded bar. Of course, many more great coastal spots are also yours to discover.
Food and Wine
High-quality ingredients, locally-sourced produce and recipes perfected throughout generations make Cypriot cuisine some of the most delicious around. Often simple flavour combinations create mouthwatering masterpieces; expect succulent grilled meat, the freshest fish, salty cheese, fragrant herbs, delicious dips, marvellous mezzes and traditional sweet pastries.
Joining these dining delicacies, Cyprus produces some pretty spectacular (though often under the radar) wine. Choose from an array of grape varieties, crafted with pride by expert locals. A renowned sweet dessert wine, Commandaria is the oldest named wine in the world that is still produced. A further hundred or so varieties are grown in the hills of the Pafos district, as well as the slopes of the Troodos Mountains.
Why not hire a car and tour the charming wine producing villages in the hills, visiting wineries, meeting hospitable locals and (of course!) sampling some of the goods for yourself?
An amazing archaeological destination and historical hotspot, Cyprus boasts an ancient Neolithic Age history, dating way back to around 8200 BC! Since then, the island has evolved over centuries – through the Bronze, Classical, Roman, Venetian, Ottoman and British Ages, to the Republic of Cyprus that exists today. As a result, the island is bursting with fascinating places to visit.
The town of Paphos is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in its entirety, due to its important past and intriguing mythological associations. It is said that Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love and beauty, rose from the sea of Paphos, contributing to the enchanting atmosphere of the town today. The Paphos District Archaelogical Museum, the Medieval Fort of Paphos, Tombs of the Kings, and a number of monasteries are just a few great sites here.
As well as offering striking scenery, the Troodos Mountain range is home to ten UNESCO World Heritage, Byzantine period churches. During these times, this inland area became a hub for art, as monks and citizens settled here to escape the Arab raid threat at the coast.
Other historical highlights include the UNESCO-listed Panagia Forviotissa church, the Bronze Age city of Nicosia and much, much more…
Cyprus is home to a variety of lovely resorts – including Coral Bay, Aphrodite Hills, Argaka and Paphos, to name just a few. Another notable resort, Protaras is a bustling town on the island’s east coast, nestled between the village of Paralimni and the striking Cavo Greco headland. Here at Villa Select, we offer a number of great properties in Protaras – including the wonderfully-named Villas Cayenne, Rosemary, Oregano, Sage and Bay Laurel.
Alongside boasting a great array of beaches (as mentioned!), Protaras’ rugged coastline offers some fantastic scenic walking trails. Diving is also great here, with many diving schools offering PADI courses and unforgettable excursions.
The resort’s lively main street is home to vibrant bars and bustling shops, as well as a variety of restaurants serving delicious food from around the globe. Traditional Cypriot tavernas and bakeries are joined by elegant seafood restaurants, beachfront Asian cuisine, an authentic pizzeria and more! Meanwhile, nestled on a hilltop overlooking the resort, discover the charming Prophet Elias Church – the many steps are worth it for the panoramic views.
