Balcón de Europa – Nerja
Nerja’s most famous landmark, the Balcón de Europa is a spectacular clifftop viewpoint overlooking the Mediterranean. Built on the site of an old fortress, it is the perfect place for a leisurely stroll, photographs and sunset views. The surrounding old town is filled with narrow streets, cafés, tapas bars and independent shops.

Nerja Caves
One of the Costa del Sol’s most impressive natural attractions, the Caves of Nerja contain enormous underground chambers, spectacular stalactites and stalagmites and prehistoric remains. The caves extend for almost 2km of galleries open to visitors and are often described as the region’s ‘prehistoric cathedral’.

Frigiliana
Just inland from Nerja, the beautiful whitewashed village of Frigiliana is one of the most picturesque places in Andalucía. Wander through steep, flower-filled lanes, browse local craft shops and stop for lunch overlooking the surrounding mountains and Mediterranean. It makes an excellent half-day excursion from Nerja.

Maro & the Maro-Cerro Gordo Natural Area
The coastline east of Nerja becomes increasingly wild and spectacular, with limestone cliffs, hidden coves and clear turquoise water. The protected Maro-Cerro Gordo area is ideal for kayaking, paddleboarding, snorkelling and boat trips, with some of the best coastal scenery on the eastern Costa del Sol.

Rio Chíllar – Nerja

Maro Waterfall
Located on the coast near Maro, this spectacular waterfall drops towards the sea and is best appreciated from the water. Kayaking and boat excursions offer the opportunity to see the waterfall, caves and cliffs from below.

One of Nerja’s most famous dining experiences. Huge pans of paella are cooked over wood fires right on Burriana Beach, making this as much an experience as a meal. The setting is wonderfully informal – sandy feet, sea views and a lively beach atmosphere. Ayo has been serving its famous paella since 1969.
Bar El Pulguilla – Old Town
Cuisine: Traditional Spanish/Andalusian tapas
Speciality: Málaga-style fried fish and seafood tapas
A Nerja institution and an excellent choice for a traditional tapas experience. Expect fried fish, seafood and small plates, with tapas served alongside drinks. It is lively, informal and very popular with both visitors and locals.
Restaurante La Puntilla

Speciality: Fresh fish, seafood, paella and gambas al pil-pil
A great choice for seafood lovers, particularly if you want something a little more traditional and less focused on the tourist beachfront. The menu centres around fresh fish and generous seafood dishes.

Best Beaches in and around Nerja
Nerja’s coastline is one of its biggest attractions, with everything from lively, well-equipped sandy beaches to tiny coves backed by dramatic cliffs.
Burriana Beach – 1.5km
Type: Large, sandy, family-friendly beach
Activities: Kayaking, paddleboarding, swimming, beach watersports
Facilities: Sunbeds, showers, restaurants, cafés and beach bars
Burriana is Nerja’s main beach and one of the best choices for families. The wide sandy beach has plenty of facilities and a lively atmosphere, while the surrounding cliffs provide a beautiful backdrop. It is also the starting point for kayaking trips towards the Maro coastline.
Calahonda Beach – 0.2km
Type: Small, picturesque cove
Activities: Swimming, sunbathing and photography
Facilities: Restaurants and cafés nearby
Tucked directly beneath the Balcón de Europa, Calahonda is one of Nerja’s most photographed little beaches. It is particularly convenient for combining sightseeing with a quick swim.
El Salón Beach – 0.3km
Type: Sheltered sandy/pebbly beach
Activities: Swimming, snorkelling and sunbathing
Another centrally located beach beneath the old town, El Salón is reached via a steep path from the Balcón de Europa. Its sheltered position makes it a pleasant spot for swimming.
Carabeo Beach – 0.8km
Type: Small sandy/pebbly cove
Activities: Swimming and snorkelling
Facilities: Limited compared with Burriana
A pretty little cove reached by steps from the old town. It has a more secluded feel than Burriana and is a lovely option when you want to escape the busier main beach.
Maro Beach – around 6km
Type: Natural beach backed by cliffs
Activities: Kayaking, snorkelling, swimming and paddleboarding
Maro is arguably one of the most scenic beaches near Nerja. Its clear water and dramatic natural surroundings make it particularly popular for kayaking and snorkelling. The protected coastline around Maro is one of the highlights of the area.
