Perched about 23 km northwest of Heraklion, Crete’s vibrant capital. Agia Pelagia nestles within a sheltered amphitheatrical bay, embraced by rocky outcrops that shield it from the typical northerly winds. The village’s white-washed homes climb the hills in an amphitheatric layout, offering sweeping views of the turquoise sea.

Activities & Places Of Interest

Activities & Places to see

Scuba Diving & Snorkeling:

The calm, protected waters of the bay are a paradise for underwater exploration. Reputable local operators such as Stay Wet Diving Center and Sea Star Divingoffer guided boat trips that cater to all skill levels, revealing hidden underwater caves and a vibrant array of Mediterranean marine life.

The Minoan Palace of Knossos:

A mandatory pilgrimage for any visitor to Crete. Just a 25-minute drive away, this sprawling archaeological site is the heart of the ancient Minoan civilization. Wander through the legendary throne room and admire the iconic frescoes that bring the myth of the Minotaur to life.

Monastic Heritage:

A short 1km hike or drive west brings you to the 13th-century Monastery of Agia Pelagia. For a more expansive experience, head further inland to the Moni Savathianon. Perched on the slopes of Mount Vasilikos, it rewards the journey with panoramic views of the Cretan landscape.

The Ruins of Apollonia:

History enthusiasts should seek out the remnants of this ancient Hellenistic town, located at the northern edge of the bay, alongside the evocative cave shrine of Evresi.

Off-Road Safaris:

For those who crave the dust and drama of the Cretan hinterland, joining a quad or Jeep safari—such as those offered by ELA Quad Safari—is the best way to bypass the tourist trails and find hidden gorges, olive groves, and traditional mountain villages.

Day Cruises:

Take to the water on a catamaran or sailing yacht. Trips to the nearby Dia Island are particularly popular, offering secluded swimming spots, snorkeling in crystal-clear lagoons, and a refreshing perspective of Crete from the sea.

Restaurants

Restaurants which are worth a visit:

Heaven Beach:

A stellar Mediterranean spot that excels at seaside dining. Their specialty is fresh catch-of-the-day preparations served with a modern twist, perfect for long, relaxed lunches with your feet in the sand.
