Discover this beautiful town, rich with history!
Just a short distance from the busy port and beach areas of Javea you will find the quaint, peaceful old town where you can admire the historic buildings and mix with the local people as they go about their daily lives.
From Plaza Constitucion walk up through the public gardens to see the restored riurau which was used to protect the grapes while they were drying. From here it is a short stroll down to the town passing the Convent, built in 1946, on the site of the original 17th century convent, which is now used as a day centre for Alzheimer sufferers.
Then enter into the maze of narrow streets which make up the centre of the old town. You can see the St. Anna Chapel which was built around 1502 and was the chapel for the old town hospital, then admire the beautifully restored Casa Lambert built in 1857, now used for cultural activities. The church of St. Bartholomew dates back to the 14th century – there are no set opening times but the best time to try is mid-morning during the week. Next, pop into the municipal market where you can mix with the local people doing their shopping and enjoy a coffee or beer in one of the bars. There are stalls selling meat, fish, flowers and vegetables, cheeses and cured meats and it is a good place to buy some of the local specialities.
Nearby you will find the Tourist Information office where you can pick up further information on things to see in the area – under the glass floor you will see the remains of over 20 tombs excavated from the Medieval Cemetery. The museum is also well worth a visit with many archaeological and ethnic exhibits housed in a 17th century building (free admission, closed Mondays).
As you wander around you will see many small shops, including one selling the stunning dresses used during the traditional fiesta parades and of course there is a selection of small bars and restaurants ideal for a drink and a few tapas.
